Sattva Gunas

What is Sattva Guna?

Sattva is one of the three gunas in Hindu and Sankhya philosophy. In Sanskrit it means “light,” “goodness” and “purity”. Those who practice sattva nourish their bodies with pure substances and engage in the practice of purification. This may include a sattvik diet, asana, pranayama, and asana practice.

Sattvic food can only be considered sattvic when it does not cause evil or disease and is be pure and natural. When people partake in a sattvic diet, they can cultivate sattva guna within themselves.

Sattva can also be referred as emotional or mental state in which the mind is calm. When sattva guna is dominant, a person has natural desire to be good and caring.

Some of the qualities in a sattvic personality include:

  • Mental strength
