Uddiyana Bandha, commonly referred to as the upward abdominal lock, is a yoga technique that involves exhaling all the air from the lungs and pulling the abdomen in and up towards the spine. This practice activates the core muscles, stimulates the digestive and endocrine systems, and helps direct the flow of energy or prana in the body. It is one of the three major bandhas or locks in yoga, alongside Moola Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha. Uddiyana Bandha is also associated with promoting mental clarity and calmness, as well as relieving irritability, anger, and depression.

How to:

  • To perform Uddiyana Bandha , begin by standing comfortably and with a stable posture. Keep your feet hip-width apart and rest your hands on your thighs.
  • Take a deep breath in and then exhale completely while contracting your abdominal muscles towards your spine and upwards.
  • Hold your breath out and engage your abdominal muscles for as long as it is comfortable to do so, avoiding any forcing or discomfort.
  • Finally, release the contraction of your abdominal muscles and inhale deeply, allowing your body to relax.
